Iowa Sen Joni Ernst demands investigation of ATF for alleged waste of ‘millions’ in taxpayer dollars

Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, sent a letter to DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz on Tuesday demanding an investigation into reports of waste at ATF.

Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst called on the Justice Department’s Office of Inspector General to investigate the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for alleged waste of millions of taxpayer dollars.

Ernst, a Republican, said in a letter to the inspector general that she was “deeply concerned” about reports that the ATF has wasted millions of dollars on unnecessary travel, training, and equipment.

“The ATF is a critical law enforcement agency, and it is unacceptable that taxpayer dollars are being wasted on frivolous expenses,” Ernst wrote. “I urge you to open an investigation into these allegations and hold those responsible accountable.”

The inspector general’s office has not yet announced whether it will open an investigation.
