Travel is a cherished pursuit, yet flight disruptions like delays and cancellations can mar the experience. As Americans plan their 2024 trips, they seek insight into airlines and airports with the best track record in minimizing such disruptions.

Recently released data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, unveils valuable insights. Cirium’s On-Time Performance Review 2023, evaluating punctuality for over 15 years using real-time flight information from 600 sources, has been published.

The report highlights a bustling year for airlines, with over 32 million scheduled passenger flights in 2023. North American airlines responded adeptly to soaring travel demand, as stated by James Hetzel, Cirium’s Product Marketing Director, projecting continued operational excellence for 2024 amid gradual resolutions to labor shortages and airport infrastructure challenges.

Delta Air Lines, once more, claims the top position, with 84.72% of over 1.4 million flights arriving within 15 minutes of their scheduled times in 2023.

Anticipating an even busier year ahead, with an expected 9.4 billion travelers surpassing 2019’s 9.2 billion passengers, the report underscores the evolving landscape.

North American Airlines’ On-Time Performance 2023:

  1. Delta Air Lines – 84.72%
  2. Alaska Airlines – 82.25%
  3. American Airlines – 80.61%
  4. United Airlines – 80.04%
  5. Southwest Airlines – 76.26%
  6. Spirit Airlines – 71.16%
  7. WestJet – 69.29%
  8. Frontier Airlines – 68.68%
  9. JetBlue Airways – 68.33%
  10. Air Canada – 63.17%

In 2023, North American airlines achieved an overall on-time arrival rate of 74.45%, up from 74.26% in 2022, managing nearly 400,000 more scheduled flights than the preceding year.

Among the top performers for on-time departures in major US airports:

  1. Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport – 84.44%
  2. Salt Lake City International Airport – 83.99%
  3. Ronald Reagan National Airport – 83.20%
  4. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport – 83.09%
  5. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport – 82.97%
  6. Philadelphia International Airport – 82.75%
  7. LaGuardia Airport – 81.34%
  8. Charlotte Douglas International Airport – 80.36%
  9. San Diego International Airport – 80.32%
  10. Washington Dulles International Airport – 80.26%

These airports ranked among the top 20 globally for on-time departures in 2023, contributing to a global on-time departure rate of 78.52%.
